Rebecca Uwakwe is a seasoned civil rights attorney, public defender, and transformative advocate dedicated to justice, equity, and leadership. She currently serves as the Director of the Clemency Project and senior staff attorney at the ACLU of New Jersey, where she leads strategic litigation and advocacy efforts to dismantle unjust laws and fight racial disparities in the criminal legal system.
Before joining the ACLU‑NJ, Rebecca spent more than a decade as a supervising attorney at Brooklyn Defender Services, zealously representing indigent clients charged with criminal offenses and defending their constitutional rights. During her time there, she also spoke on legal and civil rights panels, taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor, and mentored the next generation of attorneys.
Born in Miami to Haitian and Jamaican parents, Rebecca’s life and career are shaped by her deep commitment to community advancement. She currently resides in New Jersey with her husband and two sons, continuing her work to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and expand opportunities for Black professionals and changemakers.
In addition to her legal work, Rebecca is the author of The Black Advocate, a powerful guide for Black students and professionals that blends her personal journey with actionable strategies for success. The book walks readers through the stages of professional growth — from learner to leader — and inspires them to transform adversity into achievement.
